F’Eagles Will Win Seventh AYC Title -NFA
The Nigeria Football Association (NFA) said yesterday it was confident the Flying Eagles would win an unprecedented seventh African Youth Championship (AYC) title in March.
The Secretary-General of NFA, Musa Amadu, told newsmen in Abuja that given the team’s level of preparation especially with its performance in the ‘Super 4‘ tournament, the Flying Eagles could win its seventh AYC title.
“We have seen what the boys have been able to do. The Flying Eagles were able to beat almost all the teams that participated in the ‘Super 4’ and it’s a good indication of the level of preparedness of the team.
“I am confident that when they go to Senegal in March, they will be able to achieve the objective of not only qualifying for the World Cup in Newzealand in June, but also winning an unprecedented seventh African title for Nigeria.“
According to the NFA scribe, the two-legged friendly with the Black Satellites of Ghana is to prepare the team for the youth championship.
“I think these two games will be a good test for our boys and it will at least show to the coaches what is expected of the team when they go to Senegal in March for the African Under-20 Championship.
“The next match will be on Wednesday; (today) they had wanted to play it on Thursday but we had already booked for the boys to come back on Thursday; so they have agreed now they will play the match today.”
The Flying Eagles played a 2-2 draw with the Black Satellites of Ghana in the first leg match played in Accra, Ghana on Monday.
Nigeria is drawn alongside Senegal, Cote d’Ivoire and Congo in Group A for the preliminary round of the championship.
The opening game of the 19th edition of the biennial championship will see hosts Senegal square up against Nigeria at the Leopold Senghor Stadium in Dakar on March 8.
