The Ebonyi chapter of
the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) on Friday inaugurated a seven-man committee to monitor the forthcoming general elections and ensure the safety of journalists.
The committee, which is headed by the spokesman of the Ebonyi Police Command, Mr Chris Anyanwu, comprises of representatives of the Department of State Services, the civil defence corps, the prisons service and three members of the union.
Inaugurating the committee, the Chairman of the NUJ, Mrs Veronica Osim, said the committee was pertinent to ensure that journalists, as watchdogs of the society, were adequately protected during the elections.
Osim advised the committee members to carry out their duties diligently and urged them to work with the NUJ to ensure free, fair and credible elections.
Responding, Anyanwu said the inauguration was timely, adding that it would serve as a synergy between the security agencies and the journalists during the elections.
He said the security agencies in the state would ensure that the elections were free, fair and credible, adding that there would be no violence.
Anyanwu, however, urged the journalists to be objective in their reportage and not to be overzealous or biased.
He also advised the journalists to avoid provocative reports during the elections.
“I appeal to you to cooperate with us because it is only through your cooperation that the objectives of this committee will be realised,’’ Anyanwu said.
The highlight of the inauguration was the presentation on security tips by security agents on successful coverage of the elections.
