Dr Chubah Ezeh of the
Anambra State University, has urged Nigerians to remain committed to democracy, saying it is a superior form of government to military rule and interim government.
Ezeh told newsmen in Igbariam, near Onitsha that the conduct of credible elections in the weeks ahead would mark an important turning point in the history of democracy in the country.
“My advice is that the Nigerian electorate should at this point in time remain dogged and resilient in democracy; if we go through this condition triumphantly, it will mark a very important turning point in the history of democracy in this country.
“It is not time to abdicate, it is not time to abandon; the spirit of democracy must come alive right now.
“And time has come to continue to maintain faith on it because there is no other form of government that is better than democracy.
“We should hold on to our PVCs (Permanent Voter Cards), collect them and make sure we use them wisely; it is a right, it is a choice.
“And I believe we should in fact stop fanning the embers of disunity; provocative statements are fanning the embers of disunity.
“More often than not, it becomes retaliatory and they have corresponding implication on the credibility of our democracy.“
Ezeh condemned allusions to a likely military take-over and advised persons making such insinuations to desist in the interest of peace and unity of the country.
