UNN Needs Serious Work To Surmount Challenges – VC

University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Prof. Benjamin Ozumba, has said that the university needs surgical operation to address numerous problems caused by inadequate resources.
Ozumba made the statement in Nsukka during the 44th convocation of the university in which 14,015 graduates were conferred with first degrees of the university.
He said that with the disturbing number of abandoned projects, the university had plenty problems on its shoulders.
“The university is witnessing an avalanche of inadequate social services, inappropriate facilities and lack of staff motivation and poor maintenance of existing facilities.
“It is clear that the university needs quick surgical operation, so that the problems will not overwhelm it and prevent it from fulfilling its mandate.
“With the disturbing number of abandoned projects, a galaxy of problems is thrust on the institution, “he said.
The vice-chancellor said that of the 14,015 graduates, 85 bagged first class, 3,717 made second class upper division, 7,275 got second class honours lower division, 2,294 made third class and 227 had pass degrees.
“To our graduating students, you have been found worthy in character and in learning; it is hoped you will be good ambassadors of the university.
“Remember, if you sow a habit, you reap a character and if you sow character you reap a destiny,’’ he said.
Ozumba commended President Goodluck Jonathan for the serious attention the education sector had continued to receive in his administration.
He said, “UNN identifies with the present administration’s determination and efforts to give quality education to Nigerians.”
The convocation is the first held in the administration of Ozumba, who assumed office in July 2014.
In his remark, Pro-Chancellor and Chairman Governing Council, UNN,Mr Emmanuel Ukala (SAN),  said government had systematically promoted tertiary education in a pragmatic and functional pattern.
“Today, we are conferring first degree on young graduates who have been found worthy in character and learning.
“I urge the graduates to be good ambassadors of the university as well as contribute immensely to national development.
“I commend academic and non-academic staff of the university, their willingness and dedication to contribute their quote to the development of the institution,’’ he said.
Responding on behalf of others, the best graduating student, Miss Ozioma Ibeanu from the Department of Pharmacy, said she remained grateful to God who gave her the strength and wisdom to be the best among equals.
“I urge my fellow graduates to help to change the world for better and not allow the world to change them for the worst.
“We thank God who made it possible for all of us to graduate today, “ she said.
