UNEP Report: MOSOP Faults FG’s Strategy
The Movement for the Survival of Ogoni People (MOSOP) has expressed dissatisfaction with the approach of the Federal Government to the implementation of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) report in Ogoni.
Media Officer to the President of MOSOP, Mr. Bari-ara Kpalap who commented on recent development on the UNEP report, in an interview, said the Ogonis were tired of unfulfilled rhetorics from the Federal Government on the UNEP report.
The Media Officer urged the Federal government to march their promises with actions by being specific and not to make vague promises.
Meanwhile, the Federal Government has stated that the restoration of Ogoni will commence in the first quarter of 2015.
According to a bulletin of the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) released in the last quarter of 2014, Minister, Mrs Diezani Allison-Madueke stated that the Federal Government was in a hurry to begin the implementation of the UNEP report.
“The government feels it is important to start the process in an aggressive manner, we also think that there are some quick-wins that can be started early this year. If we do not get to do this within a very short period. We may not get to do it again”.
The Minister disclosed that; “The Federal Government was ready to fulfill its own counterpart funding, which is apart from the regular budgetary provision, that is why an independent body has been set up to manage the fund”.
“On our part, government is committed to ensuring this process is kick-started and will continue to take practical steps to encourage all stakeholders to see to the success of the implementation”, the minister added.
She said, the restoration of Ogoniland would contribute to massive job creation for the Niger Delta people, and also provide business opportunities beyond communities where oil was produce.
She stressed the need to ensure that Ogoni youths were employed to be employers of labour and not perpetual staff to others.
