The governorship candi
dates of United Democratic Party (UDP) in Imo, Chief Chukwuma Nnaji, has urged the people to vote only for credible candidates in the 2015 general elections.
Nnaji told newsmen in Owerri that voting for the right people was the only way out of the current economic hardship.
“Voting only the right people into office in 2015 is the only way for Imo people and other states in Nigeria to survive this current wave of economic downturn.
“With the price of crude oil fallen below the budget benchmark, there was the need for Nigerians to look beyond political patronage in casting their votes in 2015.
“Any states that fail to take the right decision during the election will live to tell the story.
“For Imo, my advice is for the electorate to look beyond the old practice of voting candidates because they are members of the mega party.
“The masses should check the track records of candidates because putting corrupt people into office this time would be too costly a mistake,’’ he said.
Nnaji also called on President Goodluck Jonathan and the National Assembly to look beyond politics and restore the autonomy of the local government in the country.
“If the local government is made autonomous, a lot of security and anti-social problems plaguing the nation today will be addressed,’’ Nnaji said.
He said local governments had in the past served as a stabilising force, and noted that non-functionality of the tier had resulted in excess pressure on federal and state governments.
“If the local government system is effectively running, a lot of unemployed youths will get one thing or the other doing there.
“The federal and state government can as well use the system to actualise its agricultural programme.
“This will enable the country overcome the obvious economic danger presented by this dwindling crude oil sales,’’ he said.
The governorship candidate said that he had outlined series of socio-economic programmes to enable Imo address the emerging economic challenges.
He, therefore, appealed to the people of the state to support his ambition.
