Academic and other
related activities have been paralysed at the Federal Polytechnic in Ado Eketi, Ondo State following the strike embarked upon by the institution’s Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) on Monday.
Speaking to newsmen in Ado Ekiti on Wednesday, the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), state vice chairman, Comrade Luria Ogunmehun, said the strike at the polytechnic had disrupted academic activities in the Federal Government owned tertiary institution.
Ogunmehun said ASUP, the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) and the Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Polytechnics (SSANIP) were protesting against the institution’s Rector, Dr Taiwo Akande’s leadership style which they considered was against the union’s interest.
He said the unions and students had complained that the polytechnic lacked basic facilities such as electricity and water while hostels and lecture rooms were in bad condition.
But in a swift reaction the Polytechnic Rector had ordered the immediate closure of the school.
According to a statement by the Principal Assistant Registrar Information, due to the on-going industrial action by the trade unions of the Federal Polytechnic Ado-Ekiti, the Rector, Dr Taiwo Akande has ordered for the immediate closure of the institution directing students to vacate the residential halls.
