The Nigeria Labour
Congress (NLC) has declared its preparedness for the congress delegates conference expected to hold in February 2015 for the election of new national officers for the congress.
In a statement issued on Wednesday by the NLC National Treasurer, Comrade Ayuba Wabba said that indeed the congress is ready for the delegates conference where the present leadership will give account of its stewardship to the organised labour movement and affiliate unions.
Wabba said fresh mandate will equally be given to new set of leaders to pilot the affairs of the congress, stressing that the report of the NLC’s nomination committee has been published for confirmation by the affiliate unions.
He said the present leadership under Abdulwaheed Omar has performed creditably by keeping the flag flying in labour mobilisation and his determination of protecting workers welfare against politics of government considered inimical and anti-people especially frequent increase in petrol price.
He said that the NLC still remains the last hope of the common man in terms of engaging government on issues that relate to their welfare, adding that congress still commands respect among most Nigerians and the international community.
Wabba debunked the allegation that the position of the NLC has been ceded to the private sector in the congress’ forthcoming election, he rather stressed that history will indicate that there was no time when any candidate was disallowed from contesting congress election based on tribe, religion or sector.
He emphasised that NLC election has always been on the basis of acceptance and competence and therefore NLC president position is open to be contested for by February delegates conference.
The labour leader condemned the attitude of some state governments that have failed to see workers as people that produce the wealth rather than treat them shabbily.
He hinted of the fact that the organised labour movement is working assiduously to produce a blue print of alternative development agenda that will capture the reality of the movement like the fall in the price of crude oil in the international market and its attendant effects on the economy.
