FRSC Apprehends 222 Traffic Offenders
The Federal Road
Safety Commission (FRSC) says it apprehended 222 offenders in Plateau State for various traffic offences, during the Yuletide.
The State’s Sector Commander Mr Sunday Maku, told our correspondent on Sunday in Jos that the arrests were made from 18th to 31st December 31, 2014.
“Out of the 154 that were charged to court, 143 were convicted, while 11 were found not guilty and discharged.
“They were arrested for driving unregistered vehicles, invalid motor papers, lack of fire extinguisher, overloading, worn-out tyres and underage driving, amongst others,’’ Maku said.
He also said that during the period, the command recorded 35 road crashes, with 10 deaths.
The sector commander explained that some of the causes of the carnage were dangerous overtaking, speeding and drunk driving, amongst others.
According to him, 10 drivers out of the 35 road crashes were discovered to be drunk, as at the time of the accidents.
He called on motorists to desist from drinking, as it could lead to their untimely death.
In another development, The Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) in Osun said on Tuesday that it had convicted 96 traffic offenders in the state in December 2014.
The FRSC Sector Commander in the state, Mr Muhammad Hussaini who said this in an interview with our correspondent in Osogbo, said the offences committed include: failure to use seat belt; driving without valid vehicle particulars and licence; drunk driving; driving against traffic and dangerous driving.
Husaini said the FRSC mobile courts order the offenders to pay between N2,000 and N50,000 as fines, depending on the kind of office committed.
He said the court, however, cautioned and discharged 10 offenders from those arrested during the month under review.
The sector commander warned motorists against violation of traffic rules and regulations.
He said the corps would not relent in its efforts at enforcing the laws to ensure safety on the highways at all times.
