A former president of
the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA) O.C.J Okocha (SAN), has berated the decision of the leadership of the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN) over the closure of courts across the country.
Okocha stated this while filing questions from journalists over the weekend on the recent strike action by the JUSUN leadership over the inability of the government at all levels to implement a court judgment granting the financial autonomy of the judiciary.
According to him, the effects of the strike was strongly having adverse impact in the society, adding that such action portends danger to the country, especially at this electioneering period.
The Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) agreed that the workers have the right to embark on strike, at least, for five days, and not shutting down the entire court premises.
“What is happening here in Rivers State was unfortunate as it has never happened in any political dispensation. It has never been before. Yes workers can protest for five days and made their points known and not shutting down the entire system”, noting that it has not happened anywhere in the world.
He described the judiciary as a cardinal institution that deals with the liberty and freedom of the people, adding that continue closure of such institutions means outright denial of citizens rights of freedom and liberty.
The Senior Advocate of Nigeria appeal to the leadership of JUSUN to rescind their decision and call off the current strike actions in the interest of freedom and liberty of citizens,  especially the forth coming general elections in the country.
