EU, RSG Commission Special Water, Sanitation Project

The European Union in
partnership with the Rivers State Government has flagged off a special interventionist project on water and sanitation in Rivers State, under the European Union assisted Niger Delta Support Project, (NDSP).
Addressing stakeholders at Juanita Hotel Port Harcourt during the formal launching and inauguration of the State Project Steering Committee (SPSC), the Rivers State Commissioner for Water Resources, Patricia Simon Hart, said the successful flag-off of the project in Rivers State was a product of consultations and reform initiatives for strategic development in the Rivers Water /Sanitation sector.
The commissioner thanked the European Union (EU), UNICEF and the National Planning Commission for the intervention and assured of the commitment of the Rivers State Government to the success of the programme in terms of counterpart at funding and domestication of the project.
In his remarks the Secretary, National  Planning Commission (NPC), Bassey Akpanyung who represented the Hon Minister/Deputy Chairman of National Planning commission, Dr Abubakar Sulaima said the project was fashioned to address the priorities of the 10th European Development Fund, (EDF) which include, a support for peace, conflict prevention and local government in the Niger Delta.
He said the programe was planned as a pilot scheme in five states, “Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Delta, Edo and Rivers states, with an Objective of bridging the gaps in the basic social services delivery, particularly in water and sanitation sector.
In her speech the European Union, Project Officer, on Sanitation, Food Security and Environment, Kate Kanebi, said the water sanitation component of the Niger Delta support project, was part of the wider EU support programme.
