Conductor Remanded In Prison For Stealing Handset
An Oshodi Magistrate’s
Court in Lagos on Monday remanded Sunday Ndubuisi, a bus conductor, at the Kirikiri Prisons, Apapa, for stealing a handset, valued at N13,000.
The Magistrate, Mr Akeem Fashola, remanded Ndubuisi, after he pleaded guilty to stealing the cell phone.
Fashola, however, adjourned the case until January 12, for facts and sentencing. Ndubuisi, of no fixed address, was being tried for a one-count charge of stealing.
The prosecutor, Cpl. Kehinde Olatunde, told the court that the accused committed the offence on December 28, at Oshodi, Lagos. He said that the accused stole the handset (an Asha Nokia brand), belonging to one Mrs Eunice Sumade.
“The complainant was standing under the bridge, waiting to board a bus to her house, when the accused stood beside her, pretending that he also wanted to board a bus.
“The accused used a knife to cut the complainant’s bag and removed the handset,” he said.
Olatunde said that the complainant felt a hand inside her bag, but before she knew what was happening, the accused had taken to his heels.
“Immediately the complainant discovered that her handset had been stolen, she quickly raised an alarm and people around gave the accused a hot chase and he was apprehended”.
He said that the offence contravened Section 285 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
Section 285 provides that if convicted of the offence of stealing, an accused is liable to three years imprisonment.
