Cholera: Andoni Community Tasked On Proper Hygiene
The people of Ayama
Ekede, in Andoni Local Government Area of Rivers State, have been urged to maintain proper hygiene.
The Rivers State Health Educator, Dr Doris Nria, gave this charge while addressing Traditional Rulers Community Development Committee members and the people, during a visit with members of the state Social Mobilisation Committee.
Dr Nria said by maintaining proper sanitary conditions, they will be safe from disease causing organisms.
According to her, “wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water always, especially after caring for persons infected with the cholera disease, and keep all your water storage facilities clean and covered.”
She also advised them to wash their fruits and vegetables and cook all foods thoroughly before eating.
She added that all refuse and human waste must be disposed appropriately, charging them to quickly report and present all suspected cases of cholera.
She expressed regret over the 23 fatalities recorded since the outbreak and prayed for the consolation of the bereaved families.
Speaking in an address, the Chairman CDC, Mr Awani Miller, thanked the SHE and the Social Mobilisation Committee members for the visit and lamented the numbers of deaths recorded since the epidemic.
Miller said, they were unnecessary deaths that could have been avoided noting that the problem of water shortage which he said was the root cause of the outbreak of the disease, has persisted over the years but that nothing was done to help the people.
He said, “if this kind of enlightenment had been given to us before this time, our people won’t have died the way they did,” and appealed to the government and well meaning individuals to come to their aid.
High point was the demonstration of proper hand washing skill.
