An Architect in Port
Harcourt, Mr Lewis Wagbara has identified policy inconsistency as the bane of housing development in Nigeria generally, and in Rivers State in particular.
He said that it has become usual and very embarrassing that successive administrations will formulate a policy on housing, but never accomplish the same.
Wagbara who made this known to The Tide in Port Harcourt in an interview said that policy inconsistency is unhealthy for the growth of any country or state’s housing sector.
According to him, housing sector has been known for contributing to the economic renaissance of many countries and advised the Federal Government to adopt strategies that developed nations had used to optimally provide accommodation for their citizens.
“Unfortunately, in Nigeria, we have been experiencing governments that never accomplished what they set out to achieve.
“Promoting security of tenure is a prerequisite for sustainable improvement in housing and environmental conditions. The Federal Government and local authorities should design, adopt and implement proper city development strategies and ensure availability of sufficient land for housing development”, he said.
Wagbara who is a member of the Nigeria Institute of Architects (NIA) however urged the Federal Government to pool resources together to overcome the challenges confronting it housing sector.
