Uwais, Gambari Task Police On Credible Polls …IG Orders Strike Units For Xmas
The chairman of Savannah Centre for Diplomacy and Development, a Non-Governmental organisation, retired Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Mohammed Uwais, has expressed confidence in the ability of the police to provide security for the conduct of the elections.
Uwais said this during a visit to brainstorm with the police management on how to secure the 2015 elections.
Also, a member of the NGO, one-time Nigeria’s Permanent representative to the UN, Prof. Ibrahim Gambari commended the police for its accomplishments in the global peace-keeping assignments.
Gambari said it was necessary to introduce the organisation to the leadership of the force to forge a collaboration between government agencies and non-state actors in preparation for a credible election.
The Police said the successful conduct of the 2015 elections required the cooperation of politicians, electorate and other stakeholders, and not INEC and the force alone.
Force Spokesman, Mr Emmanuel Ojukwu, said in a statement yesterday that the Inspector-General of Police, Mr Suleiman Abba, made the remark when he received members of the, Savannah Centre for Diplomacy and Development.
Abba re-affirmed the readiness of the force to ensure safety and security before, during and after the elections, adding that the personnel were being trained to ensure that.
Meanwhile, the Inspector-General of Police, Mr Suleiman Abba, has ordered a nationwide deployment of police strike units for a water-tight security throughout the Christmas and New Year celebrations.
In a statement issued by the Force Spokesman, Mr Emmanuel Ojukwu, yesterday, in Abuja.The affected units are Police Mobile Force, Special Protection Unit, Counter-Terrorism Unit, Explosive Ordinance Department, Dog Section and Mounted Troops.
Abba also ordered the police air wing to carry out air surveillance patrols, while the Marine Police should ensure a sustained patrol of all the water ways.
He directed all Zonal Assistant Inspectors-General of Police and Commissioners of Police in charge of state commands to put in place extended “police visibility and patrols.” and enjoined them to do this taking into consideration the peculiar security situation to enable them protect the citizens as they celebrate.
Abba advised operators of public places such as hotels, viewing and recreation centres to be vigilant and ensure that they properly screen all visitors/users of their facilities during the period.
“Members of the public are also urged to report any suspicious movement in their areas to the police,” he charged.
