Surveyor Tasks Colleagues On Professional Ethics
A stakeholders in the
built industry and a Quantity Surveyor by training, Femi Balogun has charged his professional collegues to ensure that everything about cost in the built environment is done by the quantity surveyor.
Balogun who gave this indication in Port Harcourt while interacting with The Tide shortly after a forum recently said that the job of the quantity surveyor is now being done by quacks who are not trained in the profession.
He said that the results of such, have been made visible in the collapse of building through the use of inadequate and sub standard materials, as well as poorly finished project, stressing that this ought not to be the order.
According to him, the only way for Quantity Surveyors to achieve that is through Information and communications Technology (ICT) in which area he urged his colleagues to be very creative so as to access information and act on them.
He said “We must ensure that everything about costing in the built environment is done by the Quantity Surveyor and the only way to do that is through the ICT, so we have to be very creative”.
Balogun, who is a fellow of the Nigerian Institute of Quantity Surveyors (NIQS) also said that the Quantity Surveying Profession ensures that the resources of the construction industry are utilised in the most economic ways for the benefit of the people.
“Quantity Surveyors should be involved in the cost management of all engineering projects. We are trained to cost everything about project,” he stated.
He, however, questioned the reason why the recently concluded council of works conference in Asaba should resolve that the Quantity Surveyors have no business in highway projects.
