Rotary Club Restates Commitment To Global Peace
The Rotary Club Inter
national has restated its commitment to global peace through the encouragement of mutual partnership and understanding among nations.
The President, Rotary Club of Port Harcourt District 9140, Rotarian Frank Eni stated this at the club international Night / Fund raising ceremony on Monday in Port Harcourt.
Rotarian Eni said that the club had been involved in the settlement of disputes in war-torn countries while the campaign for polio eradication was being intensified across the world.
The District President also said that as part of effort to foster global peace the club was involved in the provision of succour to persons in war ravaged lands as well as those being ravaged by famine and hunger.
Rotarian Eni said District 9140 had initiated various policies and programmes to improve the living condition of the people in line with this year’s theme, “Light up the world.”
He said that the club had impacted on the lives of the people in the areas of water and sanitation as well as in healthcare.
Rotarian Eni added that the club had boosted its micro-credit programme to the people, while a number of secondary schools in Port Harcourt had also received the support of the club.
Speaking on volunteerism, a staff of the River State Sustainable Development Agency (RSSDA), Dr Sabena Akpe said that the United Nations (UN) encourages volunteerism because of its positive impacts on the society.
According to her, the Millennium Development Goal (MDG) will be a mirage without the activities of volunteers, stressing that it was against this background that nations are being encouraged to support volunteerism.
High point of the event was the induction of new Rotarians by the club.
