Pirates Coach Tasks S’African Clubs On CAF Games
Orlando Pirates caretaker
coach Eric Tinkler has said that it is important that South African clubs take participating in CAF competitions seriously.
Pirates, along with Bidvest Wits, will compete in the Confederation Cup, while Mamelodi Sundowns and Kaizer Chiefs will play in the Champions League.
The Buccaneers reached the final of the Champions League in 2013 (losing out to Egyptian giants Al Ahly), but their success was the exception rather than the rule for South African clubs in continental competition.
Too often PSL teams have prioritised domestic competitions over CAF club commitments, but Tinkler believes the South African foursome competing in 2015 will represent the country with pride.
“There are a lot of fixtures and we will be playing every weekend and midweek, so it’s important we have depth in our squad,” Tinkler told Tidesports source.
“We do have a decent sized squad to play in both competitions [CAF and Absa Premiership]. It’s important for us as a technical team to assess each match and the choices we make in team selection.”
Tinkler added: “It’s fantastic that we will have four clubs from the PSL participating in these CAF competitions. All four must take these competitions seriously and we need to try and go as far as we can.”
