NIPOST: IT Dealer Wants Regulatory Body
The Federal Government
has been urged to establish an independent postal regulatory commission in order to strengthen postal service system of the country.
The Chief Executive Officer of Internet world, Mr Gift Nyeche, said this in an exclusive interview with The Tide in Port Harcourt Wednesday.
He noted that there was every need to reposition the country’s postal industry going by its important nature.
Nyeche revealed that the suggested regulatory body, when operational, would remove the double duties of regulation and operation of the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST).
According to him, the plans would also place the NIPOST at a better position following the trend of things in the ICT industry.
He explained that part of the challenge in NIPOST was its attempt to operate without a regulatory body.
The IT dealer, said it would be almost difficult for any establishment to regulate itself, adding that government should be proactive over postal issues.
On the issue of merging the postal regulatory body with the Nigeria Communication Commission (NCC) he said it was a wrong idea, that the body should be independent.
He blamed sundry issues as factors militating against the growth of NIPOST, hinting that the industry ought to be vibrant. While suggesting ways to move the industry forward, he said the operators must work in line with the 21st century system of postal service, noting that it was wrong for NIPOST to depend mainly on sales of stamps and other of its traditional duties but should launch out and introduce new ideas into the system.
Meanwhile, he has called on the federal government to also lift the ban on employment in NIPOST, saying that the post has not employed for almost two decades now.
