The Association of
General Private Medical Practioners of Nigeria (AGDMPN), have expressed fear that Nigeria’s healthcare indices in the coming year look bleak.
The chairman of the Association, Rivers State Chapter, Dr Henry Sota, made this assertion at this year’s private practioners week in Port Harcourt.
Dr Sota attributed this to the dearth of technological improvements and the inadequate funding of the health sector.
He said Nigeria was way behind in employing cutting edge technologies in healthcare delivery, which he said was the prevailing circumstances in  other parts of the world.
He expressed the opinion that if healthcare delivery must improve in the country, there has to be improved funding of the sector and a partnership between public /private sector and the private government sector.
According to him, “we need the private / public sector partnership and private-government partnership for funding of healthcare. There are cutting edge technologies in medicine and the doctors need to key in to this.
He used the opportunity to correct the notion that doctors are in private practice for the money.
“I want to correct the notion that private practioners are there only for the money. No, the health of patient is our first consideration, but in other to stay a float, we have to charge money so as to be able to run the clinic and train personnel and make some profit, he said.
