FCT Corps Members Lament Accommodation Difficulty

Members of the Na
tional Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Abuja, Federal Capital Territory have decried the difficulty they face in securing accommodation in the territory.
They have lamented that their monthly allowance is not even enough to take care of their  accommodation in Abuja, except they and their families augment it.
Reacting to the issue,  a Batch ‘A’ Corps member, Miss Gloria Ihejirika,  said that  securing accommodation after the orientation  programme  in the camp  had posed a major  challenge to corps members deployed to the FCT.
She also said that her monthly allowances go into accommodation with additional help from her family, and hence urged the Federal Government to evolve a scheme to provide accommodation for  corps members deployed to Abuja.
On his part, Mr. James Okonkwo, a Batch B Corps member has said in his  reaction that accommodation was a major challenge that corps members are faced with in Abuja, because most of  the good houses in the city were usually very expensive and out of the reach of the ordinary corps member.
“I live  at Karimo village on the outskirt of the city centre, where I usually pay N12,000 monthly for my rent. After  spending on transportation and feeding, I am left with nothing,” he said.
Another corps member, Mr. Adebayo Mathew  of Batch B has  also  lamented on the accommodation difficulty faced by them, pointing out that the NYSC lodges  being provided are grossly inadequate.
Apart from the accommodation problem, one other major challenge to corps members at the FCT is the issue of transportation, particularly for those who  secured accommodation  at the outskirt of the city.
According  to Miss Patience  Emeje, some  offices  do not care  about the welfare  of their employees,  where they ought to show concern.
She urged the government  to intervene  in the situation, adding  that the provision of accommodation and  transportation would help the corps members to concentrate more  on their  service in Abuja.
