Magistrates’ Court in Lagos on Wednesday sentenced a commercial conductor and a vulcanizer to 200 hours of community service for burglary and conspiracy, without an option of fine.
The Chief Magistrate, Mrs A.F Adeeyo, said that the convicts, Sadiq Yusuf, 19; and Samson Suluman, 20, are guilty of the charges preferred against them, after considering the facts of the case.
Yusuf resides at No. 24, Ojuafeje Crescent, Sari-Iganmu, in Lagos State, while Suluman resides at No. 30, Ojuafeje St., Sari-Iganmu, in Lagos State.
The convicts were arraigned on September 19 on a two-count charge of conspiracy and burglary.
Earlier, during their arraignment, they were granted bail in the sum of N100,000 each, with two sureties in like sum.
The prosecutor, Cpl. Jimoh Iseghede, had told the court that the convicts entered and burgled a building situated at No. 1, Babalola Close,Sari-Iganmu in Lagos on September17, at about 2.45 a.m.
Iseghede said that, Mr Ndah Ohaja, Mr Joseph Ukeme, Mr David Erameh and Mr Moses Erameh, who are the complainants, were residents in the said building.
“The convicts and others still at large, jumped the perimeter fence and entered into the complainants’ compound and removed the bulbs of their bathrooms and security lights, to enable them perform their operations.
“Ohaja, one of the complainants, saw the convicts and raised an alarm, which prompted other complainants to shout `thief !, thief !!’.
“Unfortunately, one of the gatekeepers of the complainants,’ a neighbour, heard the shout, pursued the alleged thieves but they had disappeared after scaling the perimeter fence.
“They were later arrested by the police after the incident had been reported to the police station,’’ the prosecutor said.
Iseghede said that the offences contravened Sections 305 and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
