Counsel Warns Touts Over Impersonation

A Port Harcourt based
lawyer, Barr. Endurance Akpelu, has criticized the use of touts at traffic junctions to arrest drivers who are alleged to have committed traffic offences.
Barr. Akpelu, who stated this while speaking with The Tide in Port Harcourt on Monday, explained that the use of touts at traffic junction to arrest motorists was unlawful.
He said while it was proper to arrest traffic offenders, it was unlawful to use touts to harass suspected offenders.
The Port Harcourt lawyer described the act as impersonation and pointed out that officers who used them were guilty of conspiracy.
According to him, “many officers of the Nigeria Police are taking liberty for licence. They think they can do anything and get scot-free with it.”
Whatever is not lawful cannot be made lawful by the position of the person committing the act. The law is no respecter of persons, not matter how privileged the person may be.
Barr. Akpelu said it had become commonplace as everybody wanted to rake out money for the yuletide.
He expressed regrets that those who were supposed to enforce the law were helping others break the law for their own selfish reasons.
Barr. Akpelu called on the Rivers State Police Commissioner to check the anomaly before it got out of hands.
