About 118,950 families
have adopted family planning methods in Rivers State, the Planned Parenthood Federation of Nigeria(PPFN) has said.
In its 2014 report made available to the Tide and signed by its State Project Officer, Emmanuel Owor, PPFN disclosed that the state  has recorded 24,000 new family plann- ingacceptors.
According to the report, “ PPFN provided family planning services to 118,950 family planning acceptors in all her clinics from  January to September 2014.”
It said the development shows a 31.5 per cent increase compared to 2013. Only 94,950 are revisit family planning acceptors.
The body also reached 79,450 young persons as part of its Family Life Education and Counselling(FLE&C) driven by Youth Volunteers of the PPFN.
It also trained 50 medical personnel through the Integrated Sexual Reproductive Health/Family Planning Providers conducted between July and August this year, the report further revealed.
Meanwhile, the State Project Officer of PPFN has called on women of reproductive age to undergo the Visual Inspection with Ascetic Acid (VIA).
Emphasising why women should undergo VIA procedure, Owor said, “ this is a service procedure that every woman of reproductive age needs to access at least three times during the reproductive age bracket.”
He explained that this procedure helps prevent cervical cancer and other childbirth complications and is cheap to conduct in all PPFN clinics.
He counselled couples not to adopt any hormone contraceptive unless it was medically recommended,  and advised men to  embrace family planning  methods , “ We have methods for men vasectomy, condom and withdrawal techniques.
Calling on couples to embrace family planning as a way controlling child birth, Owor stated that when women hide and use contraceptives without the knowledge of their partner, they experience more negative side effects.
