RSG Introduces Manifest Scheme For Road Transports
Henceforth, all inter-
state commercial transport owners operating from Rivers State have been directed to provide passengers manifest scheme or face the wrath of the Law.
The permanent secretary, Ministry of Transport, Nuka Nadum Nwikpasi dropped the hint during a meeting with road transport stakeholders in the conference room of the ministry in Port Harcourt, Friday.
Nwikpasi said the re-introduction of the scheme became necessary to enable the government have accurate data of passengers on board their vehicles and necessary planning and safety.
According to him, road transport stakeholders should separate the manifest scheme from that of Insurance scheme, and assured them of governments desire to create a peaceful environment for lawful business, while also warned that anybody who threatened officers of the ministry or refused to take up the scheme would not spare such persons or companies.
He reiterated that the scheme was not to witch-hunt any body but for the interest of the public for accountability and better transport system in the state.
The Permanent Secretary promised to carry out more publicity to create awareness and positive compliance and called for synergy with journalists.
While explaining the importance of the manifest scheme, Nwikpasi advised all transport companies and passengers to co-operate with officials of the ministry to make the scheme successful.
He opined that the decision to kick-start the manifest scheme was reached in a previous meeting held on October 16, 2014, and disclosed that offenders would be prosecuted.
