Rivers IGR On Steady Increase – RIRS

man of Rivers State Internal Revenue Service (RIRS) Onene Osila Obele-Oshoko says that the Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) of the state has been on the increase with tax payers voluntarily complying.
Obele – Oshoko who stated this recently during a media dinner in Port Harcourt, said more people now appreciate the need to pay tax without the use of force.
She explained that when compared with last year, the revenue profile of the state has been on the increase in 2014, pointing out that a total of N6billion was collected in October 2014.
The Executive Chairman noted that the world over it is form tax that government gets money to carry out projects, noting that the law of the country stipulates that every taxable adult is expected to pay their taxes.
She used the opportunity to clarify that churches are not expected to pay taxes but if they have any business outfit such outlets are expected to pay tax and all those employed by the church are to pay personal income tax.
Obele-Oshoko, however, noted that the RIRS has not taken any body to court for tax default but added that the service are gathering records with a view to prosecuting defaulters.
The Executive Chairman said the event was to interact with the media in an informed setting and appealed to journalists to always cross-check their facts before going to the press while promising to empower staff to respond to issues affecting their unit.
