NEMA Tasks Parents On Children’s Safety
Following the reported
death of some teenagers and infant in a recent fire incident which gutted a building in Lagos, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has urged parents to be safety conscious of their children and wards, in the event of fire disasters.
Reacting while speaking to journalists in Lagos on the emergency situation, particularly on fire incidents, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of NEMA, Mr Ibrahim Farinloye said that some parents did not put into consideration safety of their children while they are at home.
He said that it had been discovered that some parents in their homes, lock up their children behind metal protectors, while they step out briefly.
According to him, there had been reported cases of so many children who lost their lives during fire incidents because they were locked up behind protectors by their parents.
The NEMA spokes person posited that such practice puts children at very high risk, because even neigbours that might want to help would be handicapped.
Farinloye, however, advised that alternative methods be adopted for the security of children, pointing that locking them up will bring disaster in emergency situations.
It would be recalled that the infant and two teenagers were burnt to death last Wednesday when a fire incident razed down a house at Jakande Estate in the Mile-Two area of Lagos.
Sources disclosed that the fire which started at about midnight, destroyed the top floor of Block 56 at the Jakande Estate where the two teenagers and infant lived.
