Eyimba Hopeful Of Dominating FA Cup Title
Eyimba International
FC of Aba, would continue to dominate Nigeria’s football scene with arrays of players, says Kadiri Ikhana, the Coach of the winners of the just concluded 2014 Federations Cup.
Ikhana, who made the declaration to the newsmen on telephone, said that the team would wax stronger than ever having successfully defended the title.
The club had on Sunday defeated Dolphins FC, 2-1 at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Lagos to lift the trophy.
Two second half goals scored by Mfom Udoh and Chinozo Nkwokwo, were good enough for Eyimba to emerge back to back champions of the Federations Cup.
“We played well to win the Cup, even in the first half of the match when Dolphins had the upper hand; we just made sure of containing the pressure Dolphins brought.
“We changed the game plan in the second half by capitalising on our fast pace and putting more pressure on their defence.
“It worked out fine for us as a quick movement of the ball located Udoh in a comfortable position to slot in our first goal.
“After the goal we took total control of the game till we got our second goal which sealed the match for us,’’ Ikhana said.
Eyimba went ahead to double their lead when Dolphins’ defence became careless in front of its 18-yard box and allowed a fast approaching Okonkwo an easy shot at goal.
Dolphins realising the game was slipping through its hands tried to rally back with counter attacks and wing football and got a consolation goal through its star player, Eduok.
In the women’s final match, two second half goals from Asisat Oshoola and veteran player Stella Mbachu for Rivers Angels of Port Harcourt sealed the victory against Sunshine Queens of Akure
Rivers Angels victory was its fifth consecutive title in the Federations Cup.
Evelyn Nwabuoku, captain of the Rivers Angels told newsmen that the team would continue to wax stronger in winning more titles.
“We the victory, we have the best team in the women’s league and that is why we are always victorious.
“We will seal the double when we claim the Nigeria Women’s Football League in the coming week,’’ she said.
Meanwhile, Nike Adekunle, Captain of Sunshine Queens of Akure, said that they fell to the superiority of Angels and it was a painful loss to them.
“We lost a better side, it is also our second attempt in winning the trophy, however, we hope to do better next time,’’ she said.
Meanwhile, Ebere Orji of Rivers Angels emerged the federation’s cup highest goal scorer with three goals in the women’s category, while her teammate, Asisat Oshoola, won the most valuable player of the tournament.
