A lecturer in the Depart
ment of Anatomy, University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT), Prof. Hakeem Fawehinmi has called for the establishment of a Forensic Science Institute in Nigeria.
Prof. Fawehinmi who made the appeal Thursday while delivering the 111th Inaugural Lecture of the University, requested that the institute should be situated in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, pointing out the immense contributions of UNIPORT in the forensic area of research in Nigeria.
The lecturer noted that the call was necessitated by the recent spate of inter-tribal and religious conflicts in the country with their attendant casualties, and added that the institute would serve as a databank to the coroner in his assignment.
Prof. Fawehinmi who is the immediate past Dean of the Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences of the University also appealed to the authorities of the school to endow a Professorial Chair in Sickle Cell Anaemia in honour of late Prof. Gabriel Ekeke in partnership with Neimeth Pharmaceutical Plc to boost research in that field.
Speaking on the topic, Different Tailors For The Same People; The Same Surgeon For Different People; he stated that “although Human Anatomy describes the structure of the body as observed in most people and has  traditional value in surgery, there exists a wide range of ethnic and racial variation in the physical appearance and body proportions of different populations, however, all human beings occupying the globe belong to the same species, Homosapiens, and are biologically the same people.”
“Like the tailor, many anthropometric measurements are taken with flexible calibrated tapes using specific anatomical landmarks such as bony prominences, the nipples and umbilicus. Because of these physical variations, tailors are trained locally to master the body dimensions of their specific populations. On the other hand, surgical training is universal, with foreign values used as the standard most times.
