Bizman Decries Immunity Retention For President, Govs
As the National Assembly
voted to retain the immunity clause for President and governors as well as arrogate same to its members in the amended constitution, a Port Harcourt based businessman, Mr Emeka Iwezor has described the development as destructive and dangerous as it will encourage corruption at high places.
Iwezor who spoke in an interview with The Tide in Port Harcourt, said although immunity for president and governors was originally intended to make them remain undistracted, noted that the privileged is being abused by the country’s leaders.
“Immunity as entrenched in the constitution for the President and governors was to ensure that they are not distracted, and not protection for corrupt tendencies “ he said, but regretted that the country’s leaders now use it as cover-up while committing offences associated with corruption and crime.
According to him, the Senators should not have accepted and retained the clause if they were not themselves corrupt. They use it to cover up crime.
Iwezor also threw his weight on the federal government’s move for a cease fire agreement with Boko Haram sect saying that Nigerians are anxiously waiting for the end of insurgency in the North eastern part of the country.
“I suppose the ceasefire agreement will bring an end to the killings and destruction of property that had been on over the years if they are sincere”, he said while condemning further actions of insurgency by the Boko Haram group.
He stressed the need to make the negotiation result-oriented, and called on all stakeholders, the UN, including northern leader to be involved in the ceasefire agreement.
