Behaviourial Change, Panacea To Combating Diabetes

vember to raise awareness diabetes, a specialist in Family Medicine, Dr Stanley Chukwuka, has hinted on steps to be taken to prevent diabetes among Nigerians.
Dr Chukwuka, who spoke in an interview in Port Harcourt, Tuesday said the first things to do in reducing the risk of diabetes, is behaviour change in life style.
He explained that a change in life style would contribute positively to reducing the risk of diabetes.
According to him, a person seeking to reduce the risk to developing diabetes, should have a check on the consumption of carbohydrates and eating healthy meals would help reduce the risk of diabetes”.
He further said overweight and obese people should avoid the consumption of refined white sugar while advising them to rather increase the intake of foods low in fat and high fibre content. Dr  Chukwuka, a private medical practitioner, based in Port Harcourt, also advised those who have sedentary life style to engage in physical activity, saying that physical activity would help overweight and obese persons loose some extra weight thereby reducing the risk of developing diabetes, as well as taking deliberate measures to loose weight .
He advised that those who are at high risk, those whose family members have diabetes, should regularly see their doctors.
Also, he said by using prescription properly, those who have high risk could help reduce the risk of developing diabetes by 30%.
