2014 NSSF:Anambra Eyes Overall Best
Team Anambra has won
nine out of the 22 gold medals in karate to remain in contention for the best overall team at the ongoing School Sports Festival.
Team Anambra is among teams participating at the Seventh National School Sports Festival, holding in Otukpo, Benue.
Anambra had also won seven silver and four bronze medals.
Cross River came second with eight gold, two silver and one bronze while Lagos clinched three gold, one silver and three bronze to emerge third.
The Coach of the Anambra State Karate Team, Godwin Okoro, expressed happiness over the performance of his athletes.
The coach said that the haul of medals could have been more, if the athletes had done better in the fights.
He said, however, that the team would continue to dominate the game with its talented young karate athletes.
In athletics, Cross River leads the pack with 34 gold and 21 silver, followed by Anambra, 13 gold, 25 silver and 13 bronze after conclusion of competitions in 53 events on Wednesday.
Lagos garnered four gold, four silver and one bronze to clinch the third position while Niger got one gold, three silver and 11 bronze to get the fourth position.
The Coordinator of athletics, Henry Ogunmakinju, described the events as keenly contested.
Katsina won two gold, one silver and one bronze to win the five events, while Kano got two gold and three bronze to come second.
Anambra came fourth behind Lagos with one gold, two silver and three bronze.
The festival is to end on November 16.
