As Nigeria cel
ebrated her 54 years of independence last Wednesday, the Trade Union Congress of Nigerian (TUC), Rivers State branch, has x-rayed the socio-economic development of the country and urged Nigerians to be hopeful of a greater tomorrow.
The state chairman of the congress Comrade Chika Onuegbu, stated this while speaking to The Tide in Port Harcourt on Wednesday.
Onuegbu stressed that although there are still huge challenges confronting the nation after 54 years of nationhood, Nigerians should be hopeful of overcoming those challenges through collective efforts.
He said the country would overcome the present security challenges especially in the North-East geo-political zone of the country and other negative strangleholds upon its citizenry and society.
The TUC boss said collective experience has also shown that Nigerians as a resilient people can indeed with their strength, number and consciousness create a society that would be progressive, egalitarian and just for all.
Onuegbu appealed to all Nigerians to remain steadfast and support their leaders for a more meaningful socio-economic development that would have direct impact on the lives of the people.
He urged the federal government not to relent in its effort to ensure that an end is put to the present security challenge posed by insurgency in some parts of the country.
The labour leader said the labour movement would  continue to ensure that policies having positive impact on peoples living conditions are formulated and implemented, stressing that the labour movement remains the only voice of the people in the midst of oppression.
