Stakeholder Wants FRSC To Enforce Law Against Phoning While Driving
The Management of the
Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has been called upon to intensify its enforcement against the use of cell phone during driving.
A stakeholder in road transport business, Elder Victor Omai made the call during an interview with The Tide on the sideline of a sensitisation programme organised by the Rivers State Command of FRSC at the Rivers Transport Company (RTC) Park, Port Harcourt on Friday.
Omai said the use of cell phone while driving had no doubt caused many road traffic accidents, and that anyone caught should be prosecuted accordingly to serve as deterrant to others.
“As a former company and private driver, I know what I am saying because the use of phones while driving distracts the driver and is dangerous to other motorists and road users”, he said, adding that such should be checked and re-enforced for the safety of both the drivers and other occupants of the vehicle, including road users.
According to him, it is on record that most road crashes were caused by motorists using cell phones, and had led to avoidable accidents, deaths and injuries.
“Many Nigerians have died and suffered avoidable injuries arising from the recklessness of some motorists on cell phones while on the steering and it is against road traffic regulation, but with the enforcement of the law by the Federal Road Safety Corps, lives would be saved”, the stakeholder said.
Omai, who also condemned some drivers taking wrong lanes while driving said, no preferential treatment should be given to such people no matter the personalities or cash they are carrying because of the dangers involved in such act.
According to him, some blast their sirens indiscriminately and drive their vehicles as if no other person or motorist is as important as the people they are carrying, and appealed to the corps to also look into the issue as well as driving against traffic as to stem it.
