Onitsha: Anambara Govt, Corporate Bodies To Provide Street Lights

The Anambra Govern
ment has started negotiations with corporate bodies on how to constantly light-up Onitsha to fully restore night life in the commercial city.
“The new idea will also improve the aesthetics and security of the commercial city,’’ the Commissioner for Information, Chief Tony Onyima, told newsmen in Onitsha recently.
Onyima noted that the lighting-up of strategic locations in Onitsha by the state government was not sustainable, noting that there was a need for the private sector, especially corporate bodies to get involved.
“When we went to Lagos for security summit, part of the mission is to seek private sector initiative and participation.
“For the street and road lights, we want to get corporate bodies involved for it to be sustainable.
“And for any corporate body that takes up lighting-up a street or road, all the advertisement placement on the poles of the street lights would be left for them.
“They will have sole franchise right for advertising in that street or road.
“You know that is the way they do it in Lagos State which has made it sustainable,’’ the commissioner said.
He said that a consultant had been appointed by the government to see how the corporate bodies would be engaged in sustaining the Onitsha lighting-up programme.
