Nollywood has taken a new dimension with the influx of Comedy Movies currently saturating the Movie market.
The good news is that no other storyline appeals to movie lovers the way comedy movies do these days, hence the trend has shifted to local comedy movies.
Renowned for such movies are the Asaba, Delta State based production outfit and its environs. With the huge sums of money these producers make on weekly basis through these movies, the production crew has no doubt shifted base, but what is most surprising is that some A-List Nollywood actresses have now embraced these comic roles some of which are so degrading, but earn them millions of Naira.
Among the top actresses who are now favourites of movie producers for such roles are Mercy Johnson who is known as Queen of Drama in Nigerian movies. Infact she earned her fame, stardom and riches through comic roles. To her credit are over 50 hit comic movies which include “Dumebi. The Dirty Girl”, a movie that won her the Africa Magic Viewer’s Choice Award.
Her role in the popular movie “Baby Oku in am- erica” where she staged another mind blowing performance has been applauded globally.
Another Star actress in the list is Ini Edo. The award winning actress who is also a major face in Cinemas does not joke with comedy roles she plays in the “Asaba Movies”. It was gathered that Ini Edo earns over one million Naira for her comedy roles. She had played the role of mad woman, a fighter, a village girl, a truck pusher and several others.
Funke Akindele is another popular actress who is most sought after for comedy roles.
