Murder Of Policemen: Manhunt Intensifies For Fleeing Pirates
Police in Bayelsa State are still combing the creeks and sea routes in search of the pirate gangs that killed five of their colleagues about weeks ago.
The five policemen were ambushed, while escorting a barge belonging to Agip Oil Company, a forthnight ago. The security men were abducted to an unknown place before they were killed.
Their bodies and that of the barge driver were recovered days after the incident.
The state Police Commissioner, Valentine Chukwu who expressed shock over the incident, however ordered the marine division, to fish out the culprits, an order that has not paid any dividends since then.
However, it is understood, that the pirates may have relocated to more interior parts of the porous Bayelsa river outlets.
The incident is coming few weeks after the inauguration of Bayelsa Volunteers, an internal security outfit put in place by the state government to check frequent pirates operations in sea routes.
But a senior marine Police officer told The Tide that the arrest of the culprits is just a matter of time, as they were working on various security tips, saying, “they may run, but we will certainly get at them, no matter how long it will take’’.
