Minister Inaugurates Environmental Statistics Committee
The Minister of Envi
ronment, Mrs Laurentia Garuba Mallam, has inaugurated the National Steering Aid Technical Committees on the environmental statistics that would help for collection and collation of data.
Mallam who set up the committees in Abuja noted that environment plays a major role in all facets of national life, adding that there cannot be a healthier management of the environment without credible and reliable data.
According to her, the statistics commission at its 43 session in November 2012, formulated a draft plan for outlining a course of action for putting the revised framework for the development of the environmental statistics into practice. She said that the newly inaugurated committees would ensure that environmental statistics as the basic building blocks, source of facilitation, harmonisation and coordination of quantifiable environment-related information at the national, regional and global levels is to establish resulting in the production of environmental and sustainable indicators as well as a System of Integrated Environmental and Economic Accounting (SEEA).
Also speaking, the team leader Sustainable Programme, Mr. Odele Muyiwa said comprehensive reliable relevant statistics accounts and indicators are needed for developing, implementing and monitoring environmental policy and environmental concerns such as climate change, natural resources biodiversity, water quality and rural degradation among others.
