The Chief Executive
Officer, TechnoVision Communications, Mr Tomi Davis, has urged Nigerians to be effective users of the Internet.
He made the plea in Lagos at a lecture marking the Society and Technology Conference and Exhibition Week, organised by the Institute for Work and Family Integration.
The theme of the week is: “The e-Citizen: The Future Today”.
Davis said the use of the internet in the digital age had reached a point of compulsion, adding that “technology, to a large extent, had taken control of how we live our lives’’.
“We live in a world where digital literacy is inevitable and indirectly controls our lives; so we need to find sufficient ways to ensure every Nigerian becomes an e-citizen.
“Technology has redefined our views since having the world in our hands doesn’t cost as much as it used to be,’’ he said.
Davis said identity theft, hackers and other challenges made the use of the internet questionable.
“With all of these, the world won’t go back on technology, so we just have to keep up with it,’ he said.
Davis said the internet had a lot of information needed by the citizens of any developing country.
“The internet today stands as one of the basic tools used by developing economies in enhancing growth and development.
“It is a platform where users can actually get total information of anything they search for; from parenting to business information,’’ he said.
Davis urged the government to put laws in place to ensure that internet users in the country were safe in using the internet.
“In any society, you will always find individuals who want to steal or carry out fraudulent activities; so it is the same thing we have in the digital society of today.
“The responsibility lies on government to ensure that policies are put in place to enhance internet security,’’ he added.
