Members of the Enugu
State House of Assembly yesterday debunked reports of a purported impeachment of the Speaker of the House, Mr Eugene Odo.
Speaking during plenary in Enugu, the Leader of the House, Mr Sunday Ude-Okoye, said he never collected signatories for the impeachment as was alleged in some national dailies.
According to him, the alleged impeachment was the handiwork of some mischief makers who are bent on causing trouble in the state.
“In some national dailies on Tuesday, October 7, I was alleged to have been collecting signatories to impeach the speaker.
“The story is the figment of the imagination of those politicians whose stock in trade is to knock heads together and heat up the polity. It has no iota of truth and it is unverifiable.
“I want to state categorically that I did not collect any signature for the impeachment of Enugu House of Assembly Speaker,” Okoye said.
All the 24 members joined the House leader to pass vote of confidence on the speaker, urging him to continue with his good work.
The speaker, in his remarks, thanked the members for their support, saying that he was not moved by the publication.
Odo advised newsmen to always verify their stories before publishing.
In a related development, three bills were presented on the floor of the House, comprising two private member bills and one executive bill.
The private bills were the Enugu State Special Needs Agency Bill and the Enugu State House of Assembly Commission Bill while the Enugu State Polytechnic Bill was facilitated by the executive.
The clerk of the House presented the bills with a motion moved by the house leader.
The speaker, however, referred the bills to House Committee on Public Accounts and Anti-corruption.
The committee was given three weeks to submit its report to the House.
