Pupils of the 104 federal
unity colleges across the country will soon resume classes as the Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria (ASCSN) met yesterday to review the current situation of the strike action.
According to the Rivers State secretary of the union, Comrade Princewill George, the meeting to resolve the impasse followed a tripartite committee set up to liaise with the Budget office with a view to ensuring that the promotion arrears as well as the outstanding salaries and allowances were paid immediately.
Princewill said members of the committee were drawn from the union, representatives of the Federal Ministry of Labour and Productivity, and those of the Federal Ministry of Education.
He said the union in the state will ensure that the strike continues in compliance with the national secretariat of the union’s directive until a concrete commitment was made by the Ministry of Education to meet the demands of workers.
He said the union had expressed concern that previous agreements entered into with the management of the Federal Ministry of Education to settle workers entitlements had always been breached with impunity over the years.
The union’s National Secretariat had on Monday, September 22, directed its members in the headquarters of the Federal Ministry of Education, Inspectorate Departments and the 104 Federal Unity Colleges to embark on strike to press home their demand for the payment of promotion arrears as well as outstanding salaries and allowances.
The strike has paralysed activities at the education ministry and unity colleges as students that were to resume on Monday September 22 were directed to remain home.
