Men of the joint security
outfit in Anambra State, “Operation Nkpochapu”, have foiled a robbery attempt on a new generation bank in Awka, the state capital.
The robbers tried to rob the commercial bank located along the Enugu-Onitsha expressway, at about 2am on Saturday, but the security squad, which shot dead the suspected leader of the gang in a gun battle, repelled them.
The robbers were taken unawares by the security squad and the hoodlums opened fire on the operatives in a bid to escape from the scene.
In the shootout that followed, the gang leader was hit and the other robbers managed to escape, leaving behind two AK-47 rifles, one pump-action gun, one iron cutter and other equipment with which they had hoped to break into the bank’s vault.
The police spokesman in Anambra State, Uche Eze, confirmed the incident newsmen.
Eze said the slain gang leader had been on the police’s wanted list for some time now.
It was gathered that the notorious robber, whose name was given as Izu, and his gang had been behind many raids on churches in Anambra State in the last few years.
Izu and his gang were known to have been the criminals that invaded St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, Nkpor, Idemili, and St. John’s Catholic Church, Egbo-Nnewi, Nnewi North Local Government Area, among other churches.
