The Leadership of the
Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN) and its counterpart, the Nigeria Automobile Technicians Association (NATA) have restated their support for the federal government’s national vehicle emission reduction policy.
The unions in a joint statement issued in Abuja on Wednesday said their partnership support for the policy would strengthen the government’s effort of ensuring the growth of the automotive industry.
The statement signed by RTEAN National President Comrade Shehu Musa Isiwele and his NATA Counterpart Comrade Michael Ajayi Omonayin said the partnership would also enhance the automotive industry’s contribution to the transportation  sub-sector of the nation’s economy.
They said the cooperation would create an enabling environment for the manufacturing of vehicles and spare parts in the country.
The statement explained that RTEAN with 16 million membership nationwide has a robust spread that is capable of delivering an effective and efficient road transportation business.
They further stressed that RTEAN is adjudged as the best trade union in the country in the recent performance rating of trade unions in Nigeria as a result of the success of the road transport business and professional competence of the Union members.
The unions praised President Goodluck Jonathan for the automotive policy and the improvement in road network across the country, stressing that the road network has improved road transportation and reduced accidents and fatalities.
However, the vehicle emission reduction policy of the federal government enforcement began in January 2014.
The policy was meant to improve the quality of vehicles and the life of Nigerians would be enforced through the supervision of the National Environmental Standard and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA).
Under the Policy all vehicles must be installed with emission reduction technology.
