Teachers Decry Check-Off Dues Over Charge
Teachers in Rivers
State have lamented over what they described as an over charge in check-off dues payable to the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) at source.
According to the teachers, unlike other labour unions whose two per cent charge is taken from only their basic salaries, that of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) is charged on total emolument.
Speaking on behalf of the teachers, the State NUT Chairman, Chief Godfrey Nwosu said the development had amounted to a major challenge to the state executive of the Union.
Chief Nwosu stated that since assumption of office in June 2013, he and his executive had been doing everything possible to correct the situation with the relevant authorities.
“Every teacher in Rivers State has been crying over two per cent check-off deduction on their total emolument instead of their basic Pay, and we Executive have been doing a lot to resolve it,” he said.
Meanwhile, the National Executive Council (NEC) of the body has approved the check-off dues to three kobo per Naira, on teachers basic salaries, not total emolument with effect from October, 2014 .
Chief Nwosu said following the development, the state Executive has renewed its efforts to ensure that the anomaly is rectified by reaching the financial department involved in the deductions
“My appeal to the appropriate quarters is that they should ensure that this (correction) is implemented by October, this year, based on the three kobo per naira, on our basic salaries, not on total emoluments”, he said.
