Railway Workers Demand Better Package
The Leadership of the two
industrial unions in the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), Nigeria Union of Railway Workers (NURW) and the Senior Staff Association (SSA) have demanded for an improved welfare package from the railway corporation’s management.
The Unions in a joint statement to The Tide in Port Harcourt last Wednesday said the union Leaders were waiting for directive from their respective national secretariats for the workers to down tools since the corporation management has failed to enhance workers welfare package.
The Union’s Leaders said the unions are ready to work with the corporation’s management, if the management is ready to implement a new welfare package for the corporation’s workers, stressing that the unions proposed strike action would be shelved in view of the new package.
According to their spokesperson, Mr David Ndakotsu, the unions and the Corporation’s Management commit to work together harmoniously in order to realize the objectives of the corporation.
The Unions said on July 28 a proposed strike notice was served on the NRC Management following the failure of the management to accede to the demand for an enhanced pay and improved welfare package.
The Unions further added that they had also demanded the recruitment of more qualified hands to replace the aging staff.
The Unions leaders said the corporation Board Chairman, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur has intervened to broker peace and amicable resolution of the unions demand of an improve welfare package.
