The National Union of
Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) Petroleum Tanker Drivers Unit has threatened strike action over the deplorable conditions of the East-West road from the Eleme junction to Refinery at Alesa-Eleme.
In a statement by its National Public Relations Officer, Comrade Atanda Adebayo made available to The Tide on Wednesday at the refinery depot, Alesa- Eleme the union said it is prepared to down tools if it remained the only language the government understands.
Adebayo said the union would no longer watch its members die or get maimed from accident on the bad road stressing that the road leading to the Port Harcourt Refining company limited plant needs urgent rehabilitation.
The union’s spokesman said the Eleme road leading to the refinery has become a death trap to motorists especially tanker drivers who daily ply the road to load petroleum products.
He said “considering the avoidable accidents that occur almost every day on this road due to its bad state and the attendant deaths and injuries sustained by our members, the union would not hesitate to withdraw its services if the road is not fixed.”
Adebayo further added that the Union is therefore appealing to the government to fix the road to avoid the fuel scarcity that would result if its members down tools, stressing that past appeals by the union have been ignored.
However, investigation by The Tide on the road has shown that on Sunday September 7, a construction company, Reyuold construction company (RCC) has mobilized to the road winners chapel all along the road to Rise and Shine bus stop Akpajo Eleme axis of the road.
This development has ease the usual traffic situation at the Akpajo junction for the past few days.
