The paramount ruler of
Oginigba Community, Eze G..B. Odum has appealed to butchers operating at Trans Amadi Slaughter Market to carry out their businesses in accordance with laid down standards and best practices and also carry their host community along.
Eze Odum who made the appeal during an interactive forum at his palace decried a situation where butchers at the Slaughter Market were paying a large sum of money on a yearly basis to Obio/Akpor Local Government Council without giving commensurate attention to the development of the Oginigba community where the market is located.
He, therefore, charged the present leadership at the Slaughter Market to turn over a new leaf and reverse the ugly trend of marginalisation of the Community for peaceful and harmonious relationship between the community and the butchers.
In his response, the Chairman of the Butchers Union of Nigeria, Trans Amadi Slaughter Market Chapter, Alhaji Musa Baba Ahmed thanked the monarch for organising the forum, and assured that his administration would carry the community along in the scheme of things.
He, however, lamented that what the butchers were paying into the local government coffers among other revenue packages was on the high side, saying, the situation had made it difficult for them to meet other statutory obligations.
To this end, he appealed that the butchers should be considered for contracts and scholarships by the state government since, according to him, they had no other place to go to.
Alhaji Ahmed further explained that the butchers had taken measures to check the spread of Ebola disease in the area, stressing that animals for slaughter and their meat were first examined by veterinary doctors before they were sold to the people.
