Flood Destroys N7m Property In Anambra

Flood has submerged
part of Nwakpodolu Estate in Agu-Awka area of the Awka, the capital of Anambra State.
Property estimated about N7 million, which included buildings, household property, electricity transformer and farms, were destroyed as some residents of the area were seen taking refuge in neighbouring buildings.
Narrating their ordeal, a lecturer at Nnamdi Azikiwe University and  Eugene Alagbu, Chairman of the Estate Resident Association in the area, Dr. Eugene Alagbu told newsmen that it had always been the plight of the people in the area every raining season.
He said that the flood not only threatened the life and property of the residents but created stagnant water bodies which constituted a breeding ground for deadly insects and reptiles
Dr Alagbu, said that the flooding was caused by the construction of a culvert around the area, which blocked natural flood plain that led to neighbouring streams. He said that they had written the state government repeatedly but regretted that nothing had been done to check the menace and called on government to come to their aid.
