The Anambra State De
partment of Security Service (DSS), has arrested three suspects in connection with the kidnap of one Charles Onyido from Ogbunike in Oyi Local Government Area of the state.
The suspects were apprehended in their hideout on Tuesday morning, at Ogbunike, while a pump action gun, along with 25 live rounds of cartridges used for the kidnap were recovered.
It was gathered that the suspects kidnapped an Onitsha-based legal practitioner, Ejike Efobi, at Nkpor, in Idemili North Local Government Area of the state on June 5.
The state director of DSS, Mr Alex Okeiyi, told newsmen while parading the suspects that the suspects had demanded a ransom of N100 million from the victim’s family before he could be released.
The suspects were 68-year-old Ajana Onyibor from Igbakwu, Ayamelum council area, whose shrine was opposite the room, where the victim was kept for three days before his rescue.
According to the DSS, the herbalist was believed to be providing spiritual protection for members of the gang and was said to have been arrested through the help of Oyi vigilance group and Nteje police in Oyi council area.
Others were the ring leader, 25-year-old Chukwuebuka Okafor (aka- Ichafu, head scarf), from Uruezealor, in Ogidi village and 24-year-old Ernest Elem (aka Lamborghini), from Nkanu Local Government Area of Enugu State.
However, Okeiyi said investigations on the matter were still ongoing, while warning criminally-minded elements in the state to desist from their notorious activities in Anambra State, adding that they would be caught one day if they did not repent.
According to him, “kidnapping is now rare in Anambra State; the command appreciates ongoing efforts by the state government under the leadership of Chief Willie Obiano and sister security agencies to rid the state of criminality.
“We will continue to contribute our own quota in this regard until this state is free from all sorts of crimes,” Okeiyi said
The kidnap victim, Charles Onyido, who was abducted four days ago, praised the efforts of the DSS in the state, adding that it was God’s intervention that also led to his rescue.
He told reporters on Wednesday that the suspects had told him that somebody paid them N20 million to kill him before they blindfolded him after closing his shop on that fateful day.
“They tied my eyes, used matchets, gun butts and other dangerous weapons to beat me, they slapped me at will, I did not eat for three day. I also fainted three times, they equally removed one of my teeth; I saw hell on earth,” Onyido lamented
The hotelier in Ogidi described DSS as marvelous and prayed God to guide and protect them in their operations.
