RVHA Uncovers Employment Scan At COHT
The Rivers State House of Assembly has uncovered employment racket at the state College of Health Technology.
The ad-hoc committee of the House headed by Hon Gift Wokocha representing Egba/Egbema/Ndoni Constituency 1 made the revelation while submitting the committee’s report to the House.
Hon. Wokocha while presenting the report, noted that the petitioners who have worked for the institution for about 15 years, were neglected during employment but employed younger graduates taught by them in the same persons.
The House had received a petition from lecturers of the institution, complaining that they have been part-time lecturers with the college for about 15 years without hope of employment.
In the petition, they noted that letters of employment as part-time lecturers were given to them, and were being paid between N8,000 to N10,000 monthly.
The committee said during investigations, it found that employment racket existed in the institution without the knowledge of the Rivers State Civil Service Commission, as the school does not have a governing council, while employment was done on ‘Man Know Man’ basis.
While debating the motion, majority of the members agreed that it was necessary to invite the civil service commission, the provost and the petitioners to get more facts.
The Leader, Hon Chidi Lloyd wondered why the lecturers should continue to work for many years on a stipend of N10,000, saying there must be surviving on other means.
Hon Legborsi Nwidadah, who represents Khana 1 and also a member of the committee, explained that the part-time lecturers were being presented to the national health technology study regulatory body to illicit accreditation for some courses with promise to employ them.
But the Speaker, Rt.Hon Otelema Dan Amachree directed the Clerk to invite the provost, the commission and the petitioners.
He also directed the Clerk to write to those concerned while urging the executive governor to constitute a governing council for the institution.
Meanwhile, the House has rejected Bar. Nsirimovo Courage, one of the nominees as member of the board of the Rivers State Sustainable Development Agency (RSSDA).
Bar Nsirimovo was rejected for lack of experience. He was called to bar in 2011 and has not worked anywhere before now.
The House, however, cleared Dr J.C. Amadi, who works with the Niger Delta Development Commossion as director of Agriculture and Fishery.
